This popular public zoo seal enclosure, was showing signs of ageing with defects appearing in the structure. Stormcure’s Protec FW-25 system was specified to refurb the enclosure, due to its flexibility and quick application time. With its fully cold-applied, flame-free installation, works were able to be carried out whilst day-to-day operations at the busy zoo continued.
Project Challenges
Following a survey by the Stormcure Authorized Contractor, the existing seal enclosure was showing signs of ageing, as defects were appearing in the concreate structure within the enclosure. Due to this, the concrete surface had become rougher over time, which had led to an injury on one of the seals underparts, creating concern for the welfare of the seals.
The safari park required a rapid solution that would allow the repairs and modifications to be made with minimum disruption to the seals. The priority was to ensure the seals were happy and the project could be completing quickly, to ensure the seals could return to their home as quickly as possible.
Hence, why our Protec FW-25 system was specified. With its rapid cure times of 30-60 minutes per coat, the refurbishment was able to be completely quickly, to a high standard, keeping the seals safe and happy.
The Stormcure Solution
Alongside Protec FW-25, PolyFinish was specified to create a lasting finish, that was also visually appealing to compliment the enclosure. The repairs were made to the concrete surface, which was then primed and encapsulated with Protec FW-25.
PolyFinish was chosen as a sealer coat to provide a smooth finish, which was crucial to avoid any potential injuries for the seals, but still provide a level of grip when wet, which is important for the staff members working in the enclosure.
The second coat of Protec FW-25 was customized with a special pigment in the client’s choice of RAL color, in which the client chose a pale yellow shade, creating a natural and relaxing home for the seals.
The installation was completed in a total of four days, This enabled repair works by other trades to be carried out, whilst the Stormcure membrane was left exposed for one week.
Following best practice guidelines, the enclosure was flushed through with water before being refilled to welcome the seals back home. The residents were delighted with results, giving Stormcure the ‘seal of approval’.
The use of the Protec FW-25 resin system was crucial in helping meet the project deadline, thanks to its efficiency and simple installation.
The finished enclosure area underwent a thorough inspection and signed off for warrantee, leaving the client, (and the seals) exceedingly pleased with both the service and the product delivered.
