The client has after a long-lasting, watertight aesthetic green roof to match their new home, and Stormcure FW-25 system was specified. This new build 2,400ft² roof, with a distinctive 10-degree mono-pitch rectangular shape, integrates a comprehensive green roof system, extended overhangs, onboard gutters, and a photovoltaic (PV) array on the front side.
Project Challenges
The client first initiated contact with Stormcure through a website enquiry, seeking both a project specification, and guidance on the most suitable liquid system for this striking project. This new build 2400ft² roof, with a distinctive 10-degree mono-pitch rectangular shape, integrates a comprehensive green roof system, extended overhangs, onboard gutters, and a photovoltaic (PV) array on the front side.
The team offered several recommendations and presented the Protec FW-25 Warm Roof System, along with a new build outline specification and a roster of Stormcure’s Authorized Contractors. The main recommendation, pivotal to the project, involved reconsidering the initially specified prefabricated cassette system with Stormcure’s Technical Team proposing a shift towards a true warm roof build-up.
Further assistance was provided in the form of a thermal calculation and condensation risk analysis. Given the distinctive roof shape coupled with substantial insulation, a wind uplift calculation was crucial in determining bonding requirements.
The Stormcure Solution
Stormcure’s Authorized Contractors built a custom timber frame, which was then covered with SmartPly and had all joints sealed with tape. This recessed timber deck was designed to accommodate the warm roof build-up. Custom cast iron supports were strategically placed to support the roof’s perimeter canopy, which was then boarded with OSB-3.
The process began with the application of a Stormcure foil-faced self-adhering (SA) vapor barrier, followed by 200mm of Stormcure insulation and a Stormcure SA sand-faced carrier layer. These layers provided the foundation for applying the Protec FW-25 System. The system was installed in two stages: the first coat was applied with 450gsm² matting, followed by snagging and the application of the second coat. The result was a seamless finish, as seen in the final project photos.
The roof was not only insulated and waterproofed but also enhanced with a fully established extensive sedum system. This addition improves drainage, boosts thermal performance, reduces carbon dioxide levels, supports wildlife habitats, and contributes to better air quality.
To secure the PV cells, hardwood blocks were encapsulated using the Protec FW-25 System. The PV cells were then mechanically attached to the hardwood blocks, ensuring the fixings didn’t penetrate the underside of the blocks.
The project’s photos showcase the remarkable finish achievable with Stormcure’s liquid roofing membranes. Known for their seamless, low-maintenance, lightweight, and highly durable design, Stormcure’s liquid solution was the perfect foundation for the integrated green roof system. The project was completed to an exceptionally high standard, ensuring full encapsulation of the roof and canopy without sacrificing any details.
The finished roof underwent a comprehensive inspection and was approved for warranty, leaving the client extremely satisfied with both the product and the service. The result is a visually stunning, watertight roof that complements their modern home and is warrantied to last for many years.
