The highly versatile, fast curing, fully reinforced Protec FW-25 System was specified on this new build project due to its RapidCure technology, allowing close control over cure times across a wide range of temperatures. It’s extremely fast application, with cure times as low as 30 mins, makes it perfect for a new build project.
Project Challenges
This $60 million development includes the construction of a new 122-bed hospital on the site of a former medical center. The primary contractors specified Stormcure for the roofing and waterproofing systems for the flat roof areas.
The roofs were complex, involving numerous details such as vents, level changes, handrail abutments, plant supports, protrusions, stanchion blocks, and parapet walls. It was crucial that these details be waterproofed as efficiently and quickly as possible.
The waterproofing system needed to withstand heavy foot traffic and be impact-resistant, giving the client peace of mind that the walkways could be used without risking damage to the waterproofing integrity.
The Stormcure Solution
The membrane used for the waterproofing had to be highly durable, lightweight, fully root-resistant, and maintenance-free, which is why Protec FW-25 was specified.
Protec FW-25, being liquid-applied, was used to cover the upstands of these details without the need for lengthy and complicated “patching” work, creating a completely seamless interface between the details and the flat roof membrane.
Given the size of the roof areas, structural expansion and contraction movements had to be considered. The client ideally wanted a waterproofing system that could handle these movements without requiring costly modifications, like expansion joints. Protec FW-25 is specially formulated to be highly flexible while maintaining its durability and long-lasting, hard-wearing properties.
The client required designated, permanent walkways for maintenance purposes. To meet this need, Quartz Sand and PolyFinish was applied, offering a durable, hard-wearing, anti-slip finish without the expense of additional walkway systems.
Certain roof areas were designated for green roof installation, requiring a waterproofing membrane that was exceptionally durable, lightweight, root-resistant, and maintenance-free. The Protec FW-25 system met all these requirements, making it the perfect solution for the green roof sections.
It was essential that health & safety and hazard risks were kept to an absolute minimum during works. Being cold applied and low in VOC content, Protec FW-25 was able to satisfy the stringent requirements of this aspect of the project, leaving the client thoroughly satisfied with the results.
