This busy hospital was experiencing multiple leaks which were affecting the day-to-day operations within the building. Stormcure’s highly adaptable and rapid-curing Protec Evolve system was selected for this hospital roof restoration project due to its advanced RapidCure technology, and low odor formulation, perfect for environment and schedule around this project. Daily operations were able to carry on smoothly and leaks were fixed quickly and efficiently.
Challenges
This large-scale project involved the restoration of a leaking multi-bed hospital facility. The existing single ply membrane was now in an aged condition, suffering from lap joint failures and mechanical damage, however it was determined from a thermographic survey that it was in adequate condition to be retained as the base for a new roofing system. This avoided costly and disruptive tear-offs, a significant advantage for the client.
The roof design incorporated a high level of complexity, including HVAC systems, parapet walls, upstands, skylights, vents, access hatches. Efficient and reliable waterproofing of these features was critical to ensure no more leaks, which required a system capable of delivering speed, waterproofing and precision.
The waterproofing solution also needed to withstand regular foot traffic and provide strong impact resistance, ensuring that ongoing maintenance access would not compromise the integrity of the membrane. The specified system was required to be lightweight, highly durable, low-odur, and maintenance-free. Protec Evolve met all of these criteria, making it a dependable solution for the project.
The Stormcure Solution
The architect specified Stormcure systems for the restoration of the low slope roof areas, prioritizing performance, speed of installation, and long-term durability.
To support routine maintenance, designated walkways were incorporated into the design. These were achieved through the application of Quartz Sand and PolyFinish, creating a durable, anti-slip surface without the need for additional proprietary walkway systems, offering both performance and cost efficiency.
The Protec Evolve liquid-applied membrane made this process straightforward, as its seamless application easily adapts to tight spaces and intricate details, delivering quick and reliable waterproofing around sensitive equipment. The area was fully reinforced with PolyMat 225. Thanks to our RapidCure technology, following curing after 30 minutes, the top coat could be applied to complete the installation.
Health and safety considerations were a key priority throughout the works. As a cold-applied system with low VOC content, Protec Evolve minimised on-site risks associated with hot works and reduced exposure to emissions, perfect for hospitals.
The liquid-applied nature of the Stormcure system enabled seamless detailing across all upstands and complex interfaces. This resulted in a fully seamless, watertight membrane across both main roof areas and detailing.
Protec Evolve is specifically formulated to deliver high levels of flexibility at low-odur while maintaining strength and durability, ensuring reliable long-term performance under dynamic conditions, which is excactly what the client asked for.
The completed roof underwent a thorough inspection and was approved for warranty, leaving the client extremely satisfied with both the service and product provided. The finished roof is not only visually appealing but also low-maintenance and highly durable, ensuring long-term protection for years to come, thanks to Stormcure’s systems.
