The client reached out to Stormcure for project specifications and advice on the most suitable liquid system for this standout project. The 12,056-square-foot new build was a storage warehouse, making it essential for the roof to be both watertight and visually appealing.

The Stormcure team provided several recommendations, introducing the Protec FW-25 Warm Roof System, a detailed new build specification, and a list of Stormcure’s Authorized Contractors. A key suggestion involved reevaluating the initially planned prefabricated cassette system. Stormcure’s Technical Team proposed switching to a true warm roof build-up as a more effective solution.

Additional support faciliated through a third party engineer included thermal calculations and a condensation risk analysis. Considering the roof’s unique design and substantial insulation requirements, a wind uplift calculation was conducted to determine the appropriate bonding requirements.

The Stormcure Solution

Stormcure’s Protec FW-25 system is the perfect base for green roofs, thanks to its seamless, lightweight, maintenance-free, and durable properties. When installed as part of a green roof system, the membrane is highly resistant to penetration, and its exposure to UV rays is greatly minimized, enhancing the overall longevity of the system. Additionally, the membrane’s flexibility allows it to accommodate structural movement with ease.

Green roofs offer numerous benefits, including reduced energy costs through natural insulation, creating habitats for wildlife, and absorbing stormwater to help alleviate strain on overburdened sewer systems.

The process began with the application of Stormcure’s SA Primer, followed by the installation of the SA Vapor Barrier to encapsulate the insulation boards. This prepared the surface for Stormcure Authorized rigid polyiso, a crucial component of the Protec FW-25 Warm Roof system. The insulation works in harmony with the waterproofing membrane and ancillary components to provide a long-lasting and reliable solution.

The Protec FW-25 System was specified by the client as the waterproofing membrane to provide long-lasting protection for this storage facility. Protec FW-25 is a highly versatile, fast-curing, fully reinforced cold-applied liquid membrane, making it ideal for a variety of flat roofing and waterproofing applications.

The primary challenge for the roofing project at this new storage facility was managing the intricate design details required for the specified green roof.

Given the roof’s 10-degree pitch and the significant weight of the green roof system, Stormcure’s Authorized Contractors had to account for these factors. To address this, custom timber battens were installed 150mm from the roof’s perimeter, mechanically fixed to the steel substrate, and fully encapsulated within the Protec FW-25 System.

A consistent challenge throughout the roofing project was managing the installation in a live operational environment. This required exceptional coordination between the Authorized contractors and relevant third parties to ensure the work did not disrupt ongoing operations.

By maintaining constant communication with site representatives and receiving support from Stormcure’s technical and field teams, the Protec FW-25 Warm Roof System and the accompanying green roof system were installed seamlessly.

Despite the technical and logistical challenges, the green roof project was a resounding success. All work was completed to specification and met the client’s expectations. The Protec FW-25 Warm Roof System has delivered thermally efficient, waterproof protection that will serve the storage facility for many years. Following a final, comprehensive inspection, the warranty was Authorized, leaving the client fully satisfied with the results.
