The roof of the Liberty Dormitory building consisted of asphalt and felt coverings that had deteriorated over time, leading to widespread leaks. To provide durable, long-lasting, watertight properties, Stormcure’s Protec FW-25 system was chosen. With its 25-year warranty, the Protec FW-25 system offered an ideal solution to revitalize and protect this aging roof.
Project Challenges
The roof of the Liberty Dormitory building was a mix of asphalt and felt coverings, which were in an aged condition and experiencing failures that were causing widespread leaks.
The existing roofs were an inverted roof design with varying levels of insulation. It was difficult to locate and assess the issues with the current coverings due to the large amounts of ballast and insulation present above the waterproofing layer.
There were seven roof areas in need of refurbishment, totalling nearly 16,146ft². Additionally, there was water infiltration through failing parapet walls that also required repair. The client requested a thermal upgrade as part of the refurbishment works to provide lower fuel bills and energy consumption as well as reducing the risk of condensation.
The Stormcure Solution
The Stormcure Authorized Contractor began the works by removing the inverted roof components to expose the existing coverings beneath, and when they did, they found the roof level was very uneven. This was due to the presence of many unused plinths, which caused standing water to collect and worsen existing issues.
The Stormcure Authorized Contractor utilized the existing coverings as an air and vapor control layer to separate the concrete and insulation layers.
The contractor also improved the roof’s uneven surface where possible without affecting drainage. The parapet walls were then over-boarded with timber and finished with Stormcure GRP edge trims.
A Stormcure Authorized Glassfiber Tissue Faced Rigid Insulation board was bonded directly to the existing coverings prior to being directly waterproofed with Stormcure Protec FW-25 system, creating a seamless waterproof layer. Stormcure’s Protec FW-25 offers a warranty of up to 25 years, relieving the client of any roof concerns for the foreseeable future.
The use of the Stormcure Protec FW-25 system was key to meeting the three-week project deadline, thanks to its efficiency and easy installation. The waterproofing solution was further reinforced with the installation of new outlets and terminations at upstand abutments, enhancing the overall waterproofing integrity of the roof areas.
The completed roof underwent a thorough inspection and was approved for warranty, leaving the client extremely satisfied with both the service and product provided.
