Boat Launch Tunnel

Located directly on the Atlantic Ocean, this new waterfront residence required a waterproofing solution built for a demanding coastal environment. The project included a 3,400ft² concrete boat launch tunnel, providing direct access from the property to the shoreline. With the waterproofing concealed beneath 40-psi XPS insulation, soil and vegetation, long-term reliability, seamless protection and robust detailing were essential. Stormcure was called to provide a long-lasting, aesthetic finish.

Project Challenges

A new waterfront residence on the Atlantic Ocean required a robust waterproofing solution for approximately 3,400 sq. ft. of concrete construction forming a private boat launch tunnel. The structure extends from the residence toward the shoreline, creating a direct route for launching boats onto the Atlantic Ocean. The waterproofing would ultimately be concealed beneath a significant overburden build-up, including 40-psi XPS insulation, soil and vegetation.

With the structure exposed to a demanding coastal environment and the waterproofing becoming inaccessible once the project was complete, the system needed to provide reliable, fully reinforced protection before the overburden was installed. Particular attention was required at transitions, edges, penetrations and other vulnerable areas where movement and water ingress could compromise the concrete boat launch structure.

The Stormcure Solution

Stormcure was selected to provide a fully reinforced, seamless waterproofing membrane across the concrete substrate. The system comprised of:

  • Stormcure SA Primer
  • Stormcure Aluminum Facer Base-Ply
  • Stormcure FW-25 with 225 Mat – field areas
  • Stormcure FW-25 with 450 Mat – flashings and detail areas

The reinforced system was applied continuously across the concrete, with heavier reinforcement used at critical flashing and transition areas. The MPeC technology within our resin combines a modified polyester resin with CSM fibreglass reinforcement to create a highly durable, waterproof, and flexible membrane.

Once cured, the Stormcure membrane provided a continuous waterproofing layer designed to remain protected beneath the specified insulation, soil and vegetation build-up.

This application demonstrates the versatility of Stormcure for below-grade and buried concrete waterproofing applications where long-term durability, detailing and resistance to a demanding waterfront environment are critical.

Rather than relying on multiple mechanically joined components, the Stormcure system creates a fully bonded, seamless membrane, reducing potential weak points while allowing complex transitions and penetrations to be detailed as part of the waterproofing system.

The result is a durable waterproofing solution installed before the overburden was placed – providing long-term protection to the concrete boat launch tunnel while allowing the finished landscape and waterfront environment to be completed above it. Once complete, the concealed structure will provide direct boat access from the property to the Atlantic Ocean.

With the waterproofing complete, the boat launch tunnel is now protected by a fully reinforced, seamless Stormcure system, ready for the installation of the XPS insulation, soil, vegetation and final landscaping above.

In an application where the waterproofing will become inaccessible once construction is complete, getting every detail right was essential. The fully bonded Stormcure system provides continuous protection across the concrete substrate, with additional reinforcement at flashings, transitions and other critical areas to help minimise potential points of water ingress.

This project demonstrates how Stormcure can provide a robust waterproofing solution for complex below-grade structures in demanding coastal environments. Once the landscaping is complete, the waterproofing will remain concealed beneath the finished property, providing long-term protection.
